Function
Monobenzone is a topically applied depigmenting agent used to treat hyperpigmentation, such as various pigmented spots, age spots, and melanoma, with significant results. It can break down melanin in the skin, prevent the production of melanin in the skin, so that the skin to restore healthy color, without destroying melanocytes, toxicity is very light, usually made into an ointment or application, has been included in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia.
The main function of Monobenzone is to cause irreversible depigmentation by selectively destroying melanocytes, the cells in the skin responsible for producing melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color, and the destruction of melanocytes leads to a decrease in melanin production, thereby lightening the skin in the treated areas.
Monobenzone is an effective treatment for vitiligo, a skin condition characterized by the loss of skin color in patches. By depigmenting the unaffected skin around the vitiligo patches, monobenzone can help achieve a more uniform skin appearance, which may improve the psychological and emotional well-being of individuals affected by vitiligo.
